About

I'm a graphic designer, now retired. I’m not quite ready to shut down my website, but I’m no longer accepting new projects. Feel free to browse my projects. I loved working on them and working with my clients.

what clients said...

“Joy has handled all my graphics since my original roll-out in 2010.  She’s done a huge range of work, including lots of different promotional products, and they all work together but everything’s different.  Joy has a great sense of how graphic art should look and feel.  I’ve had nothing but compliments on everything Joy has done, and I feel the same way.  Her work is always careful, responsive, and on schedule.  She’s been a terrific resource to help me give my business the professional look I’ve wanted.”

"Joy's comprehensive vision for Congregation Beth El's branding has fulfilled our highest aspirations for the project. She established an aesthetic that has seamlessly translated into printed collateral, advertising, directional signage, donor recognition, and even decor. Each of these elements works individually and in absolute harmony to express the warmth and soul of the community."
Marilynn Jacobs
Immediate Past President, Congregation Beth El

"Joy Markel has helped us with everything from business cards to holiday cards and announcements and promotional materials including an animated message for a flat screen window presentation. From concept to delivery, she uses her practical knowledge of the printing industry and her graphic sensibilities to enhance each and every project we work with her on. Joy's attention to details make her a designer's designer! Joy is personable and creative. You will never have to push Joy or remind her about a deadline...before you can even get anxious about when you might get the proof, it is on your desk waiting for you. Joy is a pleasure to work with and I recommend her for all your promotional/graphic materials."

"Joy knows good design and quality printing. Her sense of color and style enhances the message without ever overpowering the content. She is always a pleasure to work with, and she has great ideas, including ones for reaching your budget goals. Joy delivers excellence time and again."

"I hired Joy in 2013 to design a creative piece for me. I had a basic idea of what I was looking for but really needed someone to take control and steer me in the right direction. Joy was the perfect person for the job. She saw my vision and produced an end result that was above and beyond what I was looking for. I will use Joy again in the future for design work and will not hesitate to recommend Joy to friends and family."

“Joy Markel designed my business logo at a time when I didn’t really know what I wanted. Her process for understanding my goals and how best to represent them was amazing. She made me think about my business from a perspective I hadn’t thought of before and as a result delivered to me the perfect logo. The colors and imagery convey exactly what I want and when I asked her to include a variation of it as an icon or profile image, she keyed in on the most iconic image my business has, a pin drop. I would highly recommend Joy to anyone looking for graphic and branding support. In fact, I have done so on several occasions, when I’ve brought her skills into play for some of my own clients."

"I was very definite in what direction  I sought for my logo and business signs. After seeing Joy's work, I decided to approach her. She immediately understood my thinking, embraced it and took it to a very high level. It is both visually striking and reflects my personality. I regularly get compliments. Kudos, to Joy!"

"I used Joy for my son's bar mitzvah invitations. It was an incredible process to see Joy at work. We worked directly from original ideas and drawings that I had done previously so the work was entirely original. The color scheme was of my son's choosing. Joy made the Jerusalem skyline into an image that would then reappear in different versions on stamps, the invite and the envelope. Each time it was sized and redrawn. The drawing that was made by Joy was an original artwork that we can now cherish forever and that was unique to my son. The process of working with Joy was wonderful. I enjoyed getting to know her and see her develop the work through her graphic programs. She is very patient and focused. Joy brings a passion to her work and an outstanding talent. I started far ahead of time and Joy met all deadlines. For my son's bar mitzvah I had vowed to work with people that I really enjoyed. You know you have picked the right person when you regret that the process is done. Now I'll just have to find another reason to work with Joy again!"

“Working with any kind of designer or graphic artist is usually, and predictably, an iterative process where the client presents a concept and wish list and the designer comes up with a first draft.  Then there are successive refinements, over multiple sessions, and eventually the final product emerges.  One of the best things about working with Joy is how quickly we went from initial concept to final design.  She listens carefully, applies her talent and wisdom, and produces work efficiently and creatively. Working with her was the most pain-free design partnership I’ve ever experienced.”
